St Bernard’s College is an independent Catholic boys school in Melbourne’s north-west. A new chapel, designed as part of a series of upgrades to the school, required a new landscape and forecourt. The design successfully resolves a number of complex topographical challenges whilst retaining a beautiful existing Jacaranda tree.

The project utilises strong native plantings in concert with sinuous polished concrete seating walls, setting the space into the hillside which the school and chapel are located on. The use of permeable pavements and bluestone complement the building’s architecture creating a calm understated space.

The project won a Landscape Architecture award at the 2020 Victorian state awards for the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.
